🌿 It starts with a leaf.
🍃 First, the kawakawa is picked
We carefully hand-pick the kawakawa, then, once it arrives at the workshop, we dry the leaves to remove moisture.
This takes several days and is the first step in preparing the kawakawa for its journey into the Healing Balm.
☘️ Then comes the infusion
The dried kawakawa is infused into olive oil, creating the kawakawa-infused oil that forms the base of the Healing Balm.
This is one of those parts of making skincare that takes a bit of patience. The infusion takes a minimum of four weeks, allowing the kawakawa time to infuse into the oil slowly. Once the infusion is complete, the kawakawa leaves are strained out, leaving the beautifully infused oil behind.
There isn’t a magic button to speed it up. Good things take time!
🫙 Then it becomes a balm
Once we have the kawakawa-infused oil, it’s combined with coconut oil, jojoba oil and beeswax.
The mixture is gently melted, mixed and then poured into jars while it’s still liquid.
And then we let it cool and set before lidding.
🍀 And finally...
Each jar is labelled, checked and packed up, ready to make its way to someone who needs a little something for dry, rough or irritated skin.
So when you pick up a jar of Kawakawa Healing Balm, you’re not just getting a skincare product.
You’re getting something that started out as a leaf growing on a kawakawa tree, was picked by hand, slowly infused into oil and then made into the balm right here in the workshop.
